Inline Speed Skating Success ~ National Championships, Whanganui December 2020-21

The South Canterbury Speed Skating Club was successful in retaining the Unity Shield (club with the most points over the championships) for the 10th consecutive year at the National Road and Flat Track Speed Skating Championships in Whanganui.

Roncalli College had six students competing at the Championships which was held fro, the 29th December 2020 - 3rd January 2021.

Congratulations to our students on their success, what a great experience to be apart of. We look forward to following throughout your season.

Emily Thompson ~ Year 9 

Emily in the cadet grade (not yet 15 years) won 2 individual bronze and 2 silver medals. Her sliver medals were in the 5km points race and in the 21 km ½ marathon.

Olivia Passos-O’Brien ~ Year 9 (Photo Olivia leading)

Olivia competing in the cadet grade won 2 individual bronze medals in the 800mtrs (flat track/indoors) and in the 21km ½ marathon held at Manfeild circuit (Feilding)

Both Olivia and Emily were in the Junior Relay teams they got Gold in the girl’s road relay (with Isabelle Stock) and 2 slivers on the flat track in the mixed team and girls team.

Sam Clarke who has been spending time at training's assisting the novice skaters placed 7th-9th in the Junior ladies grade (not yet 19 years) Sam won two Senior women's Sliver relay medals, one was with fellow team members Jody Thompson (Roncalli) and Charlotte Clarke (Ex Roncalli).

Charlotte Clarke (Year 13 2020) nursing an injury throughout the competition impressively won the 42 km Marathon.

Jody Thompson ~ Year 12 

Jody placed 4th-6th in the Junior Ladies grade. She won Gold in the Senior ladies relay team with Charli Nevin and Roshean O’Connor and also a Sliver in Senior Ladies Road Relay.

Roshean won 5 individual bronze medals, she also won 4 Gold relay team medals. Roshean was awarded the OSCAR Award with Charli Nevin (Best individual or team performance for the championships) for their Gold Medal in the Senior mixed Relay team, with fellow team members Keaton Swindells and Kaylum McAuley. It was a performance that won’t be forgotten fighting for first place, a crash from South Canterbury and a never give up attitude to take the win from position where everyone thought they couldn’t come back from! You could hear the roar from the crowd in the stadium outside.

Charli won 6 individual gold medals, 3 sliver and 1 bronze. She was the overall aggregate for the Junior Ladies grade. Also wining 3 Gold and 1 Sliver Relay Medals.
