Physical Education Department Review

Bryce Caird —

As 2018 draws to a close it is a good chance to reflect on the busy year that has been in the Physical Education Department.

The main highlights for the year for us have been, in no particular order:

  • A fantastic Year 10 camp at Boyle River in Term 1. This activity is always a big highlight for us and this year was no different. The students complete a lot of preparation for this during their Physical Education classes to help make the trip a success. Excellent weather, breathtaking scenery, and a great group of students and leaders made for an excellent few days away. A big thanks to Mr Sutherland for all the time he puts into organising this trip to make it so successful.

  • The Year 12 Physical Education trip to Christchurch. Mr Hinton, along with Mrs Sutherland and Miss Walsh, ran an excellent trip to Christchurch for our Year 12 PE 201 and 202 students. This trip incorporates two achievement standards and involves completing risk management for a range of activities such as Paintballing, Surfing and High Ropes, all while being based out at Spencer Beach Holiday Park in Christchurch.
  • At the conclusion of Term 3 our Year 10 classes completed their Year 10 Dance performances. This event has become a right of passage for our junior students and this year we saw some outstanding groups performances. Our theme for 2018 was ‘Gone but not forgotten’ to acknowledge musical greats who had passed away and this saw students selecting a wide range of toe tappers to get the audience involved.
  • Another highlight this year has been our Year 9 end of term PE competitions. Each term we bring our Year 9 PE classes together to compete as a year level in a different context. Term 1 was Aerobics, Term 2 was a class circus performance, Term 3 was our mini Olympics and classes are currently training towards their Term 4 Turbo Touch tournament, which will take place in week 8.

A big thanks to the PE staff of Mr Hinton, Mrs Sutherland, Miss Walsh and Mrs Farmer for all their hard work throughout the year and also to all the students for making 2018 such an enjoyable and productive year.

We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to another busy 2019 year.
