Gateway Programme

Marian Mehrtens —

Students get to try out a potential career before making a long term decision, they gain credits towards NCEA which also count towards industry qualifications

We are well underway with our 2021 Gateway Programme with almost 40 students participating. Students are looking at a wide range of careers ranging from trades, hospitality and retail to farming, nursing, office administration and everything in between.

Many of our students are already signed into Gateway Training Agreements with more students trialing taster days ready to start placements. Industry Training Organisation (ITO) Training Advisers visit students in their workplaces (just like an apprentice) and often visit them at school to assess industry units. This term we have had visits from MITO (Motor Industry), Service IQ (Retail, Aviation and Hospitality), Careerforce (Health & Wellbeing) and BCITO (Building and Construction), with students already well underway with assessment.

Consistent work experience is a key part of the programme with advantages to both students and employers.

Thank you to employers who have already offered assistance; the programme is well recognised in the community and with potential apprentices in high demand our future job seekers are in an ideal position

We will be profiling students in the newsletter over the coming months, we hope you like reading about their experiences.
