Gateway Profile - Liz Thompson

Marian Mehrtens —

I have researched many design careers and have had taster days with an industrial designer and a sign writer. The industry that I have chosen is the design industry, I have always had an interest in the industry and enjoy it.

My thoughts before starting Gateway this year was that it was only to help you get out into the workforce. However it also gives you handy qualifications such as a First Aid Certificate and Workplace Safety.

Every Friday I go out to Geraldine Signs for work experience. The job involves designing projects for clients, making signs for companies and helping apply wrap to vehicles. I really enjoy doing these jobs as it keeps my mind busy and is in my interests. The Industry Training Organisation that sign writers work with is Competenz, they have suggested that I do a heights course through Fire and Safety Training as this could potentially help when becoming a sign writer. To become a qualified signwriter I need to gain an apprenticeship in sign writing. I am hoping to have a full time job in the design industry, hopefully sign writing within the next year.
