Poly Pull-up 2023

Luisa Vuidravuwalu —

During the last few weeks of Term 2 and in the holidays, our Roncalli Pasifika group had been preparing for our first Poly pull-up event of 2023!!

As you might know, our group has recently been formed at the start of this year and before our big event we had been invited to Waimataitai to help out with their cultural week. We are very grateful that we got to show them a little bit of Maori and Cook Island culture. We had so much fun teaching them a few things and even got to watch their performance as well!

That same week, we had our first Poly pull-up event at Roncalli! We had TBHS and TGHS join us for the day while we shared some performances, learned a bit about how we all formed as a group and got to know each other.

It is very important that we come together and celebrate diversity in Timaru together and share a bit about ourselves. We had TBHS sing for us, TGHS doing a dance for us and Pesi Leleifua who had performed a Tongan Tau'olunga on behalf of the Roncalli Pasifika Group. It was very entertaining for us all! It was also great to have the Pasifika group leaders Joe, Stephen, Koseni and Seatini share with us a bit about how they formed, what they do to celebrate each and every culture within their group and how they bond and feel comfortable with each other.

We are very thankful that both Pasifika groups took some time out of their day to take part in our event and also Petelo Faha who is an Ex Roncalli student for joining us and giving us some words of encouragement to our Roncalli Pasifika group!

A big thank you to the school for providing us with the hall and equipment we need, also Multicultural Aoraki for the Help with Food, decorating and just being a very big support line for our Pasifika group.

We hope that next year we will do another Poly pull-up and improve from this year!!
