Before I started Gateway this year I was worried about starting in a larger work place than I was used to, I was looking forward to meeting new people as I had just moved to Timaru.

Before I started Gateway this year I was worried about starting in a larger work place than I was used to, I was looking forward to meeting new people as I had just moved to Timaru. The careers that I researched were landscaping, butchery and beekeeping. I had taster days at RSL Landscaping and Farm Fresh Meats, I liked butchery so much I didn't go to have a look at beekeeping.

I chose butchery for my work placement and go to Farm Fresh Meats every Thursday.  When I am on work experience some of the things I help with include mincing meat, home kill, bagging meat and making sausages.

The ITO that I am registered with is Competenz, I am working on assessments on demonstrating knowledge of meat cuts, stock control and mincing meat. Once I feel confident with the practical tasks required the butchery training adviser will visit me in my work place to assess me just like an apprentice.

When I leave school, I would like to start a butchery apprenticeship or work in the outdoor guiding industry.
