First Prize in Fair - Science Fair Success

Derek Vogel —

Oli Kirke wins the supreme award at the Sandford Science and Technology Fair

Last weekend, a COVID-modified Sanford Science & Technology Fair was held with 125 project entries from sixteen different schools.

After careful deliberation, judges awarded FIRST PRIZE in Fair to Roncalli College Year 10 student, Oli Kirke, for his detailed investigation into the optimal angle for solar panels on roofs. To my knowledge, it is the first time that a Roncalli College student has won this prestigious award. In addition, Oli won the NIWA prize for the best environmental project, as well as a GOLD in the Technology section. In total, Oli is to receive $800 in prize money, so a fantastic effort and a well-deserved reward.

Year 9 student, Krishna Shah was self-motivated and also submitted a thorough and important project that investigated natural ways to filter water. Her work will be acknowledged with a Participation Prize.

Well done to Oli and Krishna for pursuing and extending their interest in science! Their science boards will be on display in the office foyer over the next few weeks for interested learners.
