A successful season for the Roncalli 1st XI Hockey team

Nosha Nevin —

Thanks to all the Girls for balancing other sports and interests with Hockey plus the ongoing support of Coaches/ Managers and Families to make a challenging 2021 such a successful season.

A challenging Hockey season but still a great one for Roncalli Girls !!Even with the impact of COVID-19 wiping out the occurrence of the Secondary Schools Tournament Week - disappointing many a keen hockey player - the season still was a great success.

The First 11 Roncalli Girls Hockey Team came out on top in the Sunday Division 2 (7 Teams) Women’s South Canterbury competition. They were successful in winning the:

  • Champion of Champions Final (Beynon Cup)
  • First Round (June Leslie Cup)
  • Round Robin (Vinnelll Challenge Cup)
  • Kaan Cup for most goals scored by a secondary school team (Boys or Girls across all Divisions)

The Champions Final was especially satisfying as the Team had consistently battled their way into the final for the last 4 years, so to come out with a convincing win was fabulous. With 8 players leaving last year it has been a good opportunity to progress up players from our Seconds Team who are also showing great promise - well done Girls.

Three Roncalli players - Kayla Wright, Charli Nevin, Pippa Nevin - also played for the Geraldine Div 1 Women’s Team which won the Saturday Div 1 Champions of Champions Final for the first time since 1970 - great contribution from our girls to this success and much appreciation to Geraldine for supporting our girls.

In the representative arena we had Kayla Wright, Lexi Errington and Charli Nevin involved with the South Canterbury Under 18’s and Keane Goodger, Isla Divan and Pippa Nevin with the Under 15’s. A great achievement by the girls. Of special note was the naming of Kayla Wright as the South Canterbury Under 18 Female Player of the Year - fantastic outcome. As always below the above successes is bubbling away a number of other talented players who we hope to see further great things from in the coming seasons.

In the meantime, thanks to all the Girls for balancing other sports and interests with Hockey plus the ongoing support of Coaches/ Managers and Families to make a challenging 2021 such a successful season.
