Being Sunsmart

Rose Struthers —

New Zealand sunlight can have high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation can cause skin and eye damage.

As the Summer months approach it is timely to remind students that we encourage sunsafe behaviour. We have a good supply of College caps and bucket hats available for purchase from the College office, they are $25.00 and sunscreen is available from the College office at all times.

Examples of Sunsafe behaviour

We encourage students to:

  • wear hats that shade the face, neck, and ears, whenever they are outside and involved in school activities.
  • protect themselves with broad spectrum sunscreen (which the school provides especially at major sports events during terms 1 and 4) of at least SPF30 (Sun Protection Factor)
  • make full use of shaded areas when outside
  • keep hydrated by drinking water
  • promote and model sun protection strategies.
