Ngā Manu Kōrero 2023

David Hines —

Roncalli College competes for the first time in decades.

NGĀ MANU KŌRERO

( to speak like a bird)

What is Manu Kōrerō?

Manu Kōrero is when a majority of the Māori and Pasifika communities come together for a speech competition, either in Māori, or in English on Māori topics. They have a group supporting the speaker who perform a waiata at the end of their speech to show their support.

It has been decades since Roncalli last went to Manu Kōrero.

This year Karakia Waa and Mercedes Ferguson represented Roncalli College by competing in Manu Kōrero 2023. Roncalli competed alongside Mountainview High School as a regional group.

Eli Reuben, Viliami Gibson-Pani, Tyler Barron, Riley Curragh, Holly Thomas, Riley Shane and Syesha Goodger came to support by doing the Wāiata Tautoko (supporting singers) and to experience Manu Kōrero for the first time.

A big thanks to Whaea Iri Wilson (Mountainview) and Jas Pye (Roncalli parent) who took our students up to Kaiapoi High School for the event.

Kia kaha Te Reo Māori!
