Flexday

Mark Pribis —

Every Wednesday Year 12 and 13 students now have Flexday options.

Last year we learned that some students worked better independently during lockdown while others struggled.  We also found that our community was eager to have more opportunities for students to learn 21st Century skills (often called employability skills, life skills etc).  From this Flexday was born.  The goal of the day is to provide opportunities for students to increase their engagement with learning, stretch students who need to have enrichment, and give students an opportunitiy to get help if they need it in their school subjects.

During the day students meet with an advisor in the morning and then have two 90-minute classes to pursue an area of interest.  Block classes include activities like

Mural Painting, Food for Flatties, Basic Automotive Care, Rock Climbing, Maker Space Projects, Supercharged Studying, Maths for Living, Fitness, Performance and Health.  During this time, students can learn things like how to create a budget, how to change the oil in their car, how to 3D print a model they've created, start a band....  Flexday classes are different than the normal school classes in that students are in charge of their learning, there are no assessments unless a student chooses to get credits and there is a focus on learning for learning's sake.

Flexday started at the end of Term 1 and students will  have new classes to choose from at the end of Term 2.
