Roncalli Mixed Touch Team

Bryce Caird —

Recently competed at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships held in Christchurch.

The Roncalli College Senior Mixed Touch Team recently competed at the South Island Secondary Schools Championship, held on March 24th and 25th at Belfast, Christchurch. This team has been playing and training together since November 2017, with games every Thursday night.

The team qualified for the tournament on the back of a second place finish at the Aoraki Championships in Febraury, where they suffered a narrow loss to Mt Hutt College. At the South Island tournament the 12 top teams compete for a place in the national tournament in Hamilton in December.

The team had a tough first day, playing against some highly fancied teams. Aside from a heavy loss to Lincoln High School, there were several close games against Waimea College, Cromwell College, and Central Southland College. On the second day of play Roncalli had a close loss to Wakatipu College and a very narrow 6-5 loss to Mt Hutt.

The team was a young side and despite not winning a game at the tournament they will be much better for the experience, with several Year 11 players in the team who will be able to use the valuable experience they have gained in future tournaments. Well done to all the players and a big thanks to Miss Walsh who helped out for the weekend as team manager.
