Kia ora e te whānau - Language and Culture Update

Monica McDonald, Olivia Piddington, Samantha Robb and Mr Hines —

This month we celebrated Waitangi Day, and Japan's Foundation Day.

Roncalli College celebrates the Te Reo Māori culture through our new introduction in Year 9 and 10 teaching our students different Kapa Haka performances. This was introduced this year as we as a college have decided that we need to introduce more of our native culture. Around our school, we have our CARES values in Māori on posters. In our history curriculum, we educate our students on the history of the Treaty of Waitangi, we teach them about the promises and reality of what made our country. Most of the education about the Treaty of Waitangi is in the curriculum of Year 10. In our Religious Education curriculum, students have the opportunity to write their own Mihi. This gives them the chance to learn how to formally introduce themselves in Te Reo Māori. There are also times where Year 9 and 10 students have had the opportunity to visit Maraes, and learn about traditional Maori customs. It is evident that our college has essences of Te Reo Maori culture that has progressed through the years and will continue to progress in years to come.

On the 11th of February, we celebrated the National Foundation Day of Japan. The Japanese flag flew on the flag pole. We currently have only one Japanese international student with us at Roncalli, but pre-covid we had many students with us from Japan every year. We often had exchange students join us through exchange programs also. If you would like to experience Japan, taking a look at exchange programs in the coming years would be worth your while.
