Marian Mehrtens —

Before starting Gateway I was feeling quite nervous since I’ve only worked for my dad before but I was ready to start getting into it.  I had one taster day which was with Richards Building and I liked it so much I ended up staying and signing up with them for my placement.

At work I do stuff like putting in skirting boards, nailing in safety nets, braces and other things like that and I also cut out wood and hand it over.   I’m registered with BCITO which stands for Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation and they give me theory based units which are usually worth about 2 credits each.

A Training Advisor visits me at work experience and comes to school to asses my unit standards.  I’m pretty sure that doing the BCITO units count towards my apprenticeship which I’ll be doing once I leave school.

My plans for next year are to get my level 2, leave school and work with my dad.  I highly recommend Gateway for year 11's and other future students because it teaches you good values and gets you ready for the workforce.
