Gateway Profile - Patrick Marshall
My plan for next year is to hopefully do an apprenticeship. My advice to future students is to have an open mind about the jobs you are looking at because there is a lot out there.
My thoughts before starting gateway were I wanted to get into the trade industry and wanted to learn more about different trades. The 3 taster days I chose were brick and block laying, building, and then plumbing. I had some idea in mind of what I wanted to do and I used the careers website to find more information about the jobs. The places I went to were Todd Mudie Group for the brick and block laying, then I went out with Joyce Building and then Breen Plumbing.
I chose plumbing and drainlaying for my work placement and go to Breen Plumbing every Wednesday. I have helped with different maintenance jobs like changing different types of valves and hot water cylinders, digging and trenching, finding and fixing leaks, cleaning out gutters and drains and putting up new gutters. I am doing the Skills Organisation Gateway Programme, I have work books and assessments to do in class which get sent away for marking, they count towards an apprenticeship.
