Gateway Profile - Luca Shaw

Marian Mehrtens —

I am registered with the Skills Organisation and have a temporary Plumbing and Drainlaying license so that I am able to be on most job sites registered with Breen Plumbing

At the start of the year I was optimistic about the Gateway class and wasn't really sure what I wanted to do. I knew a trade would be beneficial for me and I was interested in a few such as Telecommunications, Electrical, and Plumbing. I trialed electrical and plumbing work experience taster days.

I chose plumbing and drainlaying and have my placement with Breen Plumbing. I mostly go out with the plumbing maintenance guys like Aaron or Mark and we mostly do replacement jobs for NZ housing or just fixing plumbing problems people are having. Sometimes I get to go along to bigger jobs such as the fitting of bathrooms which includes things like sinks and vanities, showers and baths and toilets.

During the year I have been completing various assessment booklets which help with my understanding and knowledge of the trade and look very good on a CV. The credits from the booklets are mixed between level 2 and 3 mostly and go towards NCEA. The booklets once completed are sent away for marking and if some answers are wrong you get the chance to fix them.

When I finish school this year I hope to be able to secure an apprenticeship with a plumbing firm.
