Gateway Profile - Josh Marshall

Marian Mehrtens —

Before I started Gateway this year I was worried about going into a new workplace to work with people that I had never met before but I was looking forward to getting some experience in a part of the industry that I practically knew nothing about. The careers that I researched were truck driver, diesel mechanic and courier driver. I ended up going on a taster day to see what it would be like to be a truck driver and to see what it’s like to work in the transport industry.

I chose to do my Gateway placement with Mainfreight; when I’m on work experience my day usually consists of: loading and unloading trucks, going to do pickups and drop offs in the trucks and vans, forklift driving, helping distribute items and sweeping. The assessments that I completed through Gateway include Dangerous Goods, First-aid, Workplace Health and Safety, Personal Presentation, Time Management and Strategies for Managing Stress.  When I leave school I intend to work in the transport industry - I would like to own my own business in the future.
