Marian Mehrtens —

I participated in two taster days where I was able to work at Sopheze Cafe (Mitre 10) and Te Kouka Kindergarten. Overall I chose Te Kouka because I loved the experience of seeing children learn and grow.

Before starting gateway this year I wasn’t quite sure on what I wanted to be. I had some ideas but never an exact preference or certainty as I never had the option to get experience with what I had in mind. Getting into gateway really helped with this.

At Te Kouka I had the option of assisting inside and outside. I always preferred being outside because there was always something to do and the kids were always excited. However due to Covid-19 level 2, unfortunately I couldn’t proceed to make weekly visits so I continued with my assessment booklets in my gateway study classes where I could still gain credits and knowledge about being a future Early Childhood teacher.

Over those couple of weeks I did some thinking about other options and researched about possible jobs I could be interested in. I decided I want to be a Registered Nurse. I’ve always been a people person and interested in helping people so I thought it was a perfect fit for me. But due to Covid-19 levels I couldn't get a placement in a nursing home.

So far I plan on staying for year 13 and continue to gain University Entrance and hopefully go to Ara.
