Marian Mehrtens —

Heavy Diesel Mechanic

I was pretty keen to do Gateway this year because I wanted to find out about jobs and get some good work experience. On my taster days I went to Cooper Building, South Canterbury Plumbing & Drainage and Paul Wilkins Tractors. I decided that I wanted to do my Gateway Placement in heavy diesel mechanics focusing on agricultural machinery.

My Gateway work placement is at Claas Harvest Centre in Washdyke. When I go to my work placement I get to fix and service tractors and harvesters and I also go on call outs with the other mechanics to fix broken down machinery. I am enrolled in the MITO StartUp Programme and have eLearning modules to work on in class at school and practical learning to be assessed in my workplace by the  MITO Training Adviser.

The units that I pass count towards an apprenticeship qualification as well as Level 2 NCEA.  At the end of the year I would really like to get an apprenticeship working as a heavy diesel mechanic
