Marian Mehrtens —

Choosing Hairdressing helped me gain more confidence with talking to new people and just being hands on with clients I have never met before. Overall I was very lucky to have been given the opportunity to work at Viva Hair for my work experience, I gained a lot of new knowledge and far more confidence especially in myself.

Before starting gateway I knew that sometime in my life I wanted to become a police officer or a career where I help people, but I didn't know what career pathway to choose. At the start of the year I researched what jobs would be suitable for me and what skills I could gain for my specific job choice. My three job choices I found were hairdressing, travel agency and police. Although I wasn't able to do taster days for the police and travel agency I did have a hairdressing taster day and went on to complete a work placement with Cassandra at Viva Hair.

For my learning plan I was given 5 HITO (Hairdressing Industry Training Organisation) theory tasks to complete within my time during Gateway, these theory tasks get sent back to HITO for them to mark. My booklets include papers on hair trichology, client journey, workplace requirements and sustainability concepts. My plan is to hopefully carry on with hairdressing as I really enjoyed the experience with new people and the understanding of how there is much more to hairdressing then just cutting and dying hair. I am hoping that hairdressing will help further my personal skills to help with my future career goals of becoming a police officer.
