Gateway finishing touches

Marian Mehrtens —

Students are busy finishing Individual Learning Plans, having conversations with employers, delivering thank you gifts, preparing for mock interviews and planning for next year

Everything comes together at this time of the year with plenty happening in the Gateway space. After ongoing work experience we see some great connections between students and their workplace mentors. Employers are our number one resource and are able to give good advice to students about next steps. There are some excellent results coming through in terms of qualifications, career decisions being confirmed, employment and apprenticeship opportunities, tertiary course applications and sometimes complete changes in direction.  All excellent outcomes and equally valuable.

We are finishing the year with an assessment on interview skills.  This is a fun (a little bit scary) and very useful topic, especially at this time of the year with job applications, course applications and real interviews to prepare for.  We have some local employers helping us out by conducting practice interviews which will make the exercise very worthwhile. Students have perfected their handshakes, thank you Mr Wilson for your assistance.

We are still looking for a volunteer or two if any employers in the community would be prepared to give us an hour of their time to interview 3 or 4 students.  Contact Mrs Mehrtens in the Gateway Office if you are able to give us some time m.mehrtens@roncalli.school.nz
