Marian Mehrtens —

I have been having a great time working at Cosgroves. I have learnt many new skills, such as drilling, cutting steel, punching holes in metal bars and assisting in the building of silos.

Every Wednesday I go to Dan Cosgrove Ltd to help build silos with a few workers.

Prior to starting Gateway, I wanted to work in the medical field or join the army. However, one of my teachers suggested that I look into Gateway and see what opportunities might be useful, it is a good way to gain an insight into different careers. After doing some research about engineering, the army and data science I decided engineering would have more opportunities. I spent a day at a couple of different engineering firms to gain experience and see what kind of work I would be doing. Cosgroves were happy to have me for my placement and I have now visited them several times.  I've assisted in building 12 foot and 9 foot silos and the most important thing is to observe everything the other workers do. A 12 foot silo takes about 4 hours to build and a 9 foot silo takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on how fast you can work. I am doing a Competenz maths and mechanics assessment for Gateway . My plan for next year is to go to Christchurch and study Engineering at Ara or as a plan B complete Data Science at the University of Canterbury, my options are still open in the future .
