Safety on the internet.

Ellen Walsh —

The internet is a wonderful tool when used appropriately. We are, however, aware that even here at our own College students are being approached online by those who may not have good intentions.

We need to be cautious of online security, behaviour and reputation as this can have ongoing consequences. In order to keep everyone safe, below are some ways we can remain vigilant with online activity.

Initiation of conversations around internet use is encouraged between parents/guardians and students.

Safety on the internet:

  1. Ensure that profiles are private and set to “friends only”.

  2. Only accept people as “friends” that you know in real life.

  3. Think carefully about the images shared/sent online.

  4. Be careful about the information put in bios (age, location, school, links to other accounts/ profiles etc).

  5. Take a screenshot then block, report and talk to a trusted adult about anything that makes you uncomfortable.

Being kind on the internet:

  1. Be positive and supportive online.

  2. Use appropriate language/terminology.

  3. If someone has asked not to be messaged/contacted, respect their boundaries.

  4. Compare your online behaviour to what would be acceptable/respectful face to face.

Save the date:

Later this year we are very fortunate to have John Parsons visiting the College. John is extremely sought after and is a highly regarded expert in the field of cyber safety.

John will run an evening session for parents/whanau at Roncalli College on Monday 21 November (exact start time to be confirmed).

This will be a free event.
