Before I started gateway I was expecting to explore being an electrician as I thought gateway was mostly just for trades and finding apprenticeships, but when I found out it wasn't, I started looking more into a snowsport related career

My work experience placement was with the ski patrol team at Mt Dobson.

The patrollers taught me a lot about what it's like to be a ski patroller, everything I need to know and all the skills I need to learn and develop. I helped them with tasks such as deicing the chairlift towers and marking out hazards around the mountain. I shadowed an experienced patroller when they treated a young skier who had hurt their hand, they taught me how to log an injury, and plenty of other things.

Next year I plan on going to Wanaka and doing the Tai Poutini Polytechnic ski patrolling course to gain the qualifications I would need to become a ski patroller. Gateway has given me a headstart for this as I now have experience working with and as a ski patroller. I would recommend gateway to anyone looking to experience potential career opportunities.
