Yr 12 Geology Trip

Ashley Herbert —

The Yr 12 General science class were out and about in South Canterbury studying local rocks and how they were formed.

Although the weather was a bit of a drizzle, we didn't let this stop us from gathering evidence for our current assessment. Students have been learning about the rocks in our locality and how they were formed. This trip allows us to gather evidence of these processes at work.

We first visited Ravensdown Quarry - Geraldine, where quarry manager, Roger, gave a talk about the formation of Geraldine limestone and how it was different from other limestone found on the South Island. After a short drive to Kakahu Bush, students gathered evidence on the weathering and erosion processes that break down rocks. Once again Mt Horrible was an adventure with wet paddocks to navigate through as well as a small passage through rock before we came to the remains of our local volcano, Mt Horrible.

We came back to school with wet feet, a fossil and the knowledge of rock formation in South Canterbury.
