Duke of Edinburgh Success

Rose Struthers —

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is the world's leading youth achievement award

This week we celebrated two students receiving their Duke of Edinburgh certificates and badges, Genki Nakamura received his Silver award and Sophie Bennet received her Bronze award.

Currently Roncalli has twenty students actively participating at the bronze level, ten at silver and four at gold level.

We are proud of all of our students who complete this award, and this week we would like to highlight Genki's commitment.

Genki is one of our Senior International students, Genki started with us at the beginning of 2016.

To achieve the Silver level Genki had to complete four activities:

1. Physical Recreation  - Genki was a member of the Roncalli Senior B Boys Basketball team

2. Skills – Genki used his ESOL classes as his skill – his Goal was to speak fluently and to improve his English skills. Genki has worked hard to move from Foundation to Level 3 (ELLP) or B2 equivalent (CEFR), he also achieved a Merit in Speech New Zealand Senior ESOL exams

3. Service – Genki chose to provide Service to other people by volunteering at Timaru Boys Brigade, and

4. Adventurous Journey – Genki had to undertake a practice journey and a qualifying journey - Genki completed the Kepler track for his practice tramp and then the Abel Tasman track for his qualifying.

Congratulations to all of our students who challenge themselves to complete this world class award.
