New Cellphone expectations in 2021

Mark Pribis —

We are changing our expectations from students regarding cell phones in 2021

As a school we value the following:

  • Students being actively involved with others and developing relationships with others in their immediate surroundings.

  • Students being focused while in the classroom on the tasks at hand and engaging with the teaching and learning opportunities.

  • Developing sense of belonging to the greater school community.

  • Keeping students safe from cyber bullying and inappropriate online activities.

We are putting the following procedures in place to ensure that students have a safe and productive learning environment while minimising distractions.

  • Mobile phones are not to be on the person (ie not in pockets, blazers, or on desks) in the classroom during class time including learning advisory and capabilities classes.

  • Smart watches are considered extensions of smartphones and are not allowed on the person during class.

  • Earphones are not allowed on the person in class unless directed by the teacher. Students will need earphones in some classes but they are only to be used with their laptops for purposes of the lesson.

  • Whānau who wish to contact your student during the school day please contact the school office staff who will get a message to them or wait for them to contact you during interval or lunch.

Consequences will be given if a student is found to have a phone device or earphones on their person in a classroom or inappropriate use by any staff member.

  • First Offence - When a student fails to comply with the above, their phone/digital device will be confiscated for the rest of the school day and kept securely in the school office. The student may collect the device at the end of the school day.

  • Second Offence - On the second offence the digital device will be confiscated and kept securely in the school office and may only be collected by a parent/caregiver after the school day has finished up until 4:30 pm or the next day. The staff will contact the parent to inform them that this consequence has been issued.

  • Third Offence - the mobile phone/device will be confiscated for the rest of the school day, kept in the school office and may only be collected by a parent/caregiver after the school day has finished up until 4:30 pm. The office will contact you to inform you this has happened. The student now forfeits the right to bring any device to school for 10 weeks.
