Marian Mehrtens —

I made the decision to have my work experience at Mainfreight because I liked the work there more than my other taster days.

Before I started Gateway I was really keen to try building and joinery but when I tried these jobs I decided I wasn’t as interested as I thought. For my taster days I went to a lot of places, I had days out at SC Toyota, Can-Am, Honda, Craig O'Keefe Building, Hyundai and Mainfreight. I chose truck driving/transportation because I really liked doing the trucking activities like loading/unloading.  At Mainfreight the tasks I do are helping with loading & unloading, sweeping and generally keeping the yard tidy.

Throughout the year I have been working on MITO e-learning which is an introduction to mechanics. I have a portal where I log in and do online assessments about tools and what you use them for, good work habits, workplace safety and basic automotive components. Most of the tasks are theory with only one task being practical. The way I get assessed is at the end of each section of information I will get tested on my knowledge and understanding. This helped me get more knowledge of the mechanic area of work.

My plan for next year is to either come back to school or apply for a polytech course
