Michael Watt - Sacred Heart School

Marian Mehrtens —

The Careerforce unit standards I do in Gateway count towards a New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing and will help me with getting a job in the future

My thoughts before starting Gateway this year were that I would be able to get a head start in the workforce.  I researched 2 careers and trialed taster days with a sparky and a teacher aide. The Industry I selected was being a teacher aide so that I could help the kids and the teacher throughout the day. My work placement is with Sacred Heart Primary School, I help with small reading and math groups and also help out some of the higher need kids that are at the school.

My learning plan for Gateway includes Careerforce worksheets like knowing a person’s rights, being a support worker, interacting with people and physical disability and support needs. A lot of my assessments are practical based, the skills I learn are verified in the workplace then they get sent away to be assessed. The Careerforce unit standards count towards a New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing and will help me with getting a job.

I would like to leave school at the end of this year if I find a job but if not then I will come back to school.
