Marian Mehrtens —

Gateway really helped me become more confident in what I want to do and less scared of my future after school.

Before starting Gateway this year I didn’t know much about it, I just knew I wanted to do it. We had interviews before the year started and that answered all of my questions and I knew this was going to work for me.  I had three taster days to help decide what I wanted to do; those three were building with Dimension Building, tiling with Todd Mudie Group and interior design with Barrett Joinery.

I decided that my placement would be tiling for TMG and it was the best decision. I go every Wednesday and each week I am somewhere different learning new skills. When I have Gateway at school I do all my theory work that is assessed by someone from BCITO. The units that I am doing at school count towards an apprenticeship if I decide to do one in the future, which means it will take some time off of the apprenticeship.

When I leave school I would like to do a tiling apprenticeship, hopefully with TMG. I highly recommend Gateway for any students that want to leave school after year 12 or if you're not sure what you want to do. It's a great opportunity to learn new skills and gain life skills as we also do units to do with health and safety, first aid and how to create a CV.
