Roncalli College athletes shine

Noah Oudemans —

Our track and field team had a great trip to the South Island Secondary School Athletics Championships in Christchurch last weekend.

On 9-10 April, Roncalli sent a strong team of 16 athletes to Christcurch to compete at Ngā Puna Wai sports hub. The team consisted of Emily Thompson, Karen McDonald, Harrison Laing, Gabriel Dickerson, Bethany Oudemans, Rhiana Nimo, Madison Sugrue, Lachlan List, Archie Jones, Sean Newlands, Monica McDonald, Rhys Stevens, Maika Mason, William Laing, Noah Oudemans and Charli Nevin.

We travelled up in two vans driven by Mrs Toni Oudemans and Mrs Cat Sutherland.  The team had a good bonding experience, staying at Addington Jailhouse. This was a good experience for the team with the only downside being the huge amount of leftover pasta.

A huge thanks to Toni Oudemans, Morgan Oudemans, Ms Leckie and Mrs Sutherland for managing the team and looking after everyone.

Even though the conditions weren’t the best at the track with a huge swirling wind, our athletes competed very well with most getting top-eight finishes.

Harrison Laing: 1st under 14 boys 400 metres and 800 metres

William Laing: 1st under 16 boys 400 metres
