Building Apprentice

Before I started Gateway I was pretty sure that I wanted to be a builder but I did some taster days in other jobs just to be sure. I did one taster day with Shore Construction as a builder and one with Power Farming looking at Diesel Mechanics. After my taster days, even though I really enjoyed the work at Power Farming, I decided that I still wanted to do building for my weekly Gateway placement. Each week I go to Shore Construction where I work in a team doing jobs like putting framework up, installing pink batts and gib board, building decks, doing concrete work and everything in between. I have been working mostly out in Geraldine with a team of builders. At school I have recently completed six Level 2 building unit standards from the BCITO in things like tools, calculations, health and safety and other construction topics.

Note:  Ben completed the Gateway Programme at the end of Term 2 and started his full time apprenticeship with Shore Construction.  Congratulations Ben, this is a really good effort and a great kick-start to your career in building and construction.
