We have had many students competing in Regional, South Island and National events and competitions over the holiday period. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge them on their outstanding achievements.

Roncalli College Sports Awards Evening

Thank you for everyone who attending the Roncalli Sports Awards evening on Tuesday 16 October to celebrate our sporting success in 2018. A special thank you to our guest speaker former Roncalli student Leanna Ryan. Leanna is currently studying at the University of Waikato as a Hillary Scholar working towards a Master of Applied Psychology. Leanna is a New Zealand Secondary Schools 100m Hurdles Title and Record Holder and a member of the Black Ferns Sevens Squad for 2018. It was wonderful to have a past student return to share her journey and the opportunities she has experienced through sport.

Congratulations to all recipients on your achievements.


Chess Power Regional Champs

The Roncalli College Chess Team competed in the Chess Power Regional Champs in Oamaru last term. The following students were winners in the senior team’s event:

Hayley Esler ~ Aerobics Nationals

Hayley Esler competed in the 2018 New Zealand Gymnastics Championships in Tauranga from 4 to 6 October at the ASB Baypark Stadium.

This was a multi-discipline event with artistic gymnastics, aerobics, trampolining and rhythmic gymnastics all being held at the same venue.

Hayley competed in the Aerobics competition and received 3 gold and 1 silver medals:

  • 1st  - Individual Level 4 (Gold Medal)
  • 1st - Small Group Level 5 (Gold Medal)
  • 1st - Large Group Level 5 (Gold Medal)
  • 2nd - Trio Level 4 (Silver Medal)


Jaxson Whyte – Cycling 

National School Road Championships, 29 Sept – 1 October: Christchurch (Under 15 Boys)

  • 1st Gold Medal – Road Race
  • 2nd Silver Medal – Points Race

YUNCA Junior Tour of Southland: 5 – 7 October 2018: 

  • 1st – 0verall 
  • 1st – Points Race 
  • 3rd – King of the Mountain

South Island School Track Championships, 9 – 10 October 2018:  Invercargill (Under 15 Boys)

  • 1st – 1500m Scratch Race
  • 1st – 3km Points Race
  • 3rd – 2k point a lap Race
  • 3rd – 515m Scratch Race


Reagan Ashley – Basketball Referee

1 - 4 September 2018: Refereed at the Junior Secondary Schools Zone 4 Premierships in Timaru. Awarded the Premier Semi Final & Premier Final (Gold Medal Game).

Refereed at the New Zealand Tertiary/University Championships in the North Shore, Auckland. Awarded the Men's Semi Final and Men's Grand Final - Gold Medal Game.

1 - 6 October 2018: Refereed at the Schick New Zealand Secondary School Nationals in Palmerston North. Awarded the AA Boys Quarter Final, AA Boys Semi Final and AA Girls Grand Final - Gold Medal Game.


Charlotte Clarke – Inline Speed Skating

2018 Asian Roller Skating Championships in Namwon, South Korea
Competing in the Junior Ladies (Under 18) grade.
Bank Track: Junior ladies 1,000 m sprint - 14th; 10,000 m points/elimination - 9th; 3,000 m team relay - 5th.
Road Track: Junior ladies 10,000 m points - 7th; 100 m sprint - 11th; Combined ladies marathon (Junior and senior ladies) - 24th.

2018 South Island Area Championships in Timaru
Flat track:
Intermediate ladies 300m time trial - 1st in a time of 34.294; 800m sprint - 1st; 1,500m - 1st; 3,000m -1st; Combined ladies (12+) 5,000m open - 1st; Intermediate/senior ladies 3,000m team relay - 1st.


Matthew Gray – Swimming

2018 NZ Short Course Championships in Auckland

Matthew competed with the Swim Timaru Club in the Men's 15 Year Old age group.

  • 3rd Place Bronze Medal - 400 Individual Medley
  • Top 8 placings in the 100m Breaststroke, 200 IM, 100IM, 200 Backstroke, 200 Fly


Luka Foy – Swimming

2018 NZ Short Course Championships in Auckland

Luka Foy represented the Swim Timaru Club and gained 3 top 8 placings:

  • 5th place - 200m Back
  • 6th place - 100m Back
  • 8th place - 50m Back


Jamie Fitzgerald – Table Tennis

New Zealand Open Individual Table Tennis Championships, 8 – 13 October: Tauranga

Jamie represented South Canterbury in the Under 18 Grade ~ 6th place in the Teams Event.


South Canterbury Under 15 Hockey Boys - success in holidays

Congratulations to Oliver Richards, Conor Boult and Harper McKerrow who were in the South Canterbury Under 15 Boys Hockey team who finished 2nd place at the National Under 15 Hockey Tournament in Dunedin during the school holidays.

When: Wednesday Nights - starting 24 October 2018 - 12 December 2018 and 30 January 2019 - 27 February 2019.

Under 17 and Development Grades:

$3.00 Entry Fee

Sign on by 6.00 pm - racing starts at 6.15pm

Development Grade - 4.8km Handicap

Under 17 - 9.6km mix between handicap and graded scratch

Overall Point's series with points accumulated for each race for grade as well as points for your school going towards the Heartland Richo Interschool Trophy.
