Board of Trustee Policies

Andrew Jones —

Roncalli College is committed to equipping its pupils with social and personal skills to gain confidence in making responsible choices about drug and alcohol use.

Roncalli College is committed to equipping its pupils with social and personal skills to gain confidence in making responsible choices about drug and alcohol use. Roncalli College recognises children and young adults are more vulnerable to the negative impacts of drug use on the developing brain and that young people are at higher risk of harm from illicit drug use; such risks of harm including unwanted or unprotected sex, assaults, arrests and harmful effects on social life, finances and the ability to work/study.

Within our teaching programme students are taught about the harmful effects but students and parents must be aware of the long term effects that impact on decision making. Of importance is that fact that drug use moves beyond the weekend and has medium and long term affects that move into the realms of the working week and school life.

In the same way that businesses reserve the right to test employees, the College reserves the right to ask students to submit the results of a drug test if it suspects alcohol or drug use that could impact on the safety and well-being of the student and others, especially when it comes to Gateway placements and trips away. This could also be a tool to assist students in working through a support programme.

Recently the Board ratified the College Alcohol and Drug Policy. For a copy of the Board Policies, please follow this link to the Governance page of the website:  informationhttps://www.roncalli.school.nz/special-character/governance.php.
