Success for the Roncalli First XI Boys Football team

Suellen Robb —

This year the Roncalli First XI boys football team have worked hard under the coaching of ex-pupil, Jordyn Ellis, and have won the St Kevin's exchange, the U18 Grade competition as well as the Junior Cup.

In the South Canterbury competition the Roncalli College Boys First XI, captained by Zack Robb, won 10 out of the 12 games. In the Youth Cup competition the boys were unbeaten, scoring a total of 19 goals with only 3 against.

One of many memorable moments of the season was when the boys played at Sir Basil Arthur in the freezing rain. Despite being behind at half time and almost turning blue the team dug deep and came away with the win. The Coach, Manager and all the Supporters were very proud of the boys that day.

This year the team had a scare early in the season when one of our senior players was injured and we thought we had lost him for the season. It was a very proud day for all when Andrew Boot returned to the field late in the season and made a remarkable comeback. The First XI team would like to thank all their supporters who assisted them in their fundraising efforts.

Medi Clinic sponsored the Hoodies for the team while the following businesses sponsored the training tops as well as helping with the fundraising for the Winter Tournament. Unfortunately due to the Covid 19 lockdown the tournament did not go ahead but it is nice to know that we will have a head start with our fundraising for next year.
