Marian Mehrtens —

I researched a lot of career paths including, baker, real estate agent and receptionist.

My thoughts before starting gateway this year were mostly excited to get out into the workplace and discovering what I actually enjoyed doing.

I enjoyed my taster days which were held at the TDC (receptionist), RSM Law (receptionist) and I even had a taster day lined up at the New World bakery but I pulled out because I realised I didn’t want baking to be a job but more of a hobby that I can do in my own time.

I liked working at the TDC but by the time I decided I wanted to stay there they had sadly already employed new people and were busy training them, which I understood and I am very happy to have landed on RSM Law as my work experience.

My work placement at RSM Law includes the duties of a receptionist like typing, sorting files, greeting customers, getting documents signed by the lawyers, deliveries and other duties for example stocking the kitchen, washing dishes and making/refilling coffee.  I enjoy every bit of it, especially answering the phone.

My learning plan includes getting practicals signed off by my supervisor and Te Kura work online to help me with office equipment and accounting.

My plan next year is to leave school, I would like to get a job at RSM Law but if not I will look for a good reception job somewhere else.
