Marian Mehrtens —

Next year I am hoping to have a gap year then plan on going to the New Zealand School of Tourism to study Level 4 Tourism, Airline and Flight Attending.

Before starting Gateway this year I thought it could be a way to get work experience in jobs that I was interested in, hoping that one job would appeal to me and that I could carry it on in the future.

My work placement started at JB’s Cafe at Ballantynes where I was given tasks doing dishes, clearing tables, serving customers and delivering food and beverages. Out of this placement I gained new skills, communicated as a team and interacted with customers. This placement helped me gain customer service skills which will help me in any future pathway I choose to follow.

I have completed a Level 3, Success in Cafe Assessment paper where I had to undergo written and physical assessment work. In this assessment I was required to write a bit about the cafe that I was working in and what they have to offer on their menu, as well as written work about different types of selling points I could use when serving customers. I was going to be attending the New Zealand School of Tourism 2 day taster day in Christchurch, however that got cancelled due to going into Level 4 lockdown the day before it started. Hopefully I can do this course later in the year as it will give me an idea about flight attending and what it is all about.
