Careers Exploration
Students undertake exciting careers exploration during the April holidays
Many students undertake either paid or unpaid work during the holidays and it is often these experiences that help them to determine which career pathway they choose to follow when they leave school.
During the April holidays we have three students undertake work/careers exploration of a different kind.
Liam Baldwin a Year 11 student was fortunate enough to be selected to attend a Defence Careers Experience Week at Burnham Army Camp. The focus for this camp was on IT/Communications roles within the NZ Defence forces. Liam enjoyed this experience and it has made him even more interested in joining the Defence Forces.
Ella Reeves a Year 13 student was selected along with two other local students to participate in a Timaru District Council initiative whereby the students were given a "real" design project to complete. Ella had to help design evacuation floor plans for local council buildings. Ella is interested in studying design at a tertiary institution in 2019 and this experience has given her some insight into what possible jobs she could be doing once she has completed her qualification.
Finally, Sam Pengelly a Year 11 student spent a day out at the Fonterra Clandeboye plant in their transport division. Earlier in the year Sam attended a local Transport and Logistics Day at Levels Raceway and talked to the Fonterra representatives at this event. As a result of this meeting Sam was then invited out to the plant in the holidays. He really enjoyed this day and there is a possibility that he may be able to get a part time job at Fonterra sometime in the future.
All of these awesome experiences have come about due to our students taking the initiative and putting their names forward for opportunities that have been advertised.
