Marian Mehrtens —

Mrs Mehrtens set me up with the MITO programme for transport and logistics called Shiftup. The majority of the assessments are auto-marked online with the exception of one which is a practical assessment

At the start of the year I wasn't sure if Gateway would be the right subject for me, but now I realise it is a great opportunity to explore careers.

For my career research I chose agricultural contracting, heavy/light mechanic and transport and logistics. I had taster days with Central Feeds in Winchester where I was helping out in the workshop and a little bit of tractor driving.

My mechanic taster day was in the workshop at South Canterbury Toyota where I was fitting exterior parts to new cars, replacing parts on some recalled cars and general servicing. My second taster day for being a mechanic was at Paul Wilkins Tractors where I spent the day assembling a loader frame for a tractor.

For the transport and logistics day I went to H&J Bruce Transport. There I helped with the LPG run in the morning, we took LPG bottles to various places including restaurants, warehouses and gas stations. I also helped with various deliveries round town and went to places like Talley’s, Toll and New Zealand Couriers.

I settled with H&J Bruce Transport as my work placement, I help out a former Roncalli Gateway student with deliveries all around South Canterbury. I help with tying down loads for transport, manifesting freight so it goes to the right place and on the right truck, I also help with the loading and unloading process of the freight trucks.

I am doing  my forklift training at work and will be assessed through Gateway to gain my OSH certificate. When I leave school I plan to get all of my licences and dangerous goods endorsement.
