Ann Hough —

The SPEC Programme at Roncalli College offers an alternative pathway towards NCEA Level 1

A small group of them have been learning the technicalities of the coffee machine and communication with people, using coffee orders as the context. To put their skills into a real life hospitality situation they recently hosted a morning tea. They worked closely with our support staff to plan and cost the menu, make and distribute invitations, shop for the ingredients, prepare the food and serve the guests. Guests were greeted as they arrived, shown where to sit and orders taken for tea, coffee or a drink to their liking. The array of food was neatly displayed in a buffet style - sandwiches, fruit kebabs, sausage rolls, muffins and more, all lovingly prepared by the students.

Matthew formally welcomed the guests to the event, on behalf of the group, before inviting them to enjoy the hospitality. He also ended the morning tea by thanking the support staff  for helping them put the event together and the guests for coming. To further develop their hospitality skills, the students have plans to hold a future bake sale and make the morning tea a regular event each term.
