Student Opportunities

Rose Struthers —

Rotary Youth Exchange programme

The Rotary Youth Exchange Programme is one of the oldest student exchange programmes in

existence (started in 1929). It is an official programme of Rotary International and currently it globally

involves over 8,000 student movements per year. RYE is a 12-month overseas exchange program

open to all 15-17.5 year old school students. It enables the selected students to live and learn within

another country and culture, to be supported through the Rotary International network of clubs and to

have an effective scholarship worth about $30,000. Through RYE there is no foreign student fee or

need to pay for accommodation. Hosting and pastoral care is the Host Rotary Club responsibility.

Applicants must be between 15 & 17.5 years at the time of January 2021 departure, they must be of

good character, be willing to learn and be willing to accept challenges to their personal comfort

zones.

Rotary is a voluntary service organisation and there are no paid employees within the RYE

programme and this helps keep the basic student cost to a minimum.

Each selected student is “sponsored” by a local New Zealand Rotary Club and in turn is “hosted”

overseas by a Rotary Club. There is no upfront application fee for RYE in District 9980.
