Careers Corner!

Lou Heenan —

Lots of opportunities being showcased for Students this term!

Term 3 has started off very busy in terms of careers events. For Year 13 students this is the term where they start to make final decisions about where they will head next year. Students thinking about going on to tertiary study are busy applying for halls of residences and scholarships and the tertiary institutions are making their final visits to the College to help students plan their 2019 courses. Students who are thinking about finding jobs or taking a gap year are also finalising their plans and some students are being offered great opportunities by our local employers.

We have also been busy with other careers events for the senior students.

Pathways Assemblies
On Wednesday morning’s the Year 11 and 12 students have been attending pathways assemblies. This year the assemblies are focusing on jobs or careers within the 6 vocational pathways of manufacturing and technology industries, construction and infrastructure industries, primary industries, service industries, social and community industries and creative industries. From the first four sessions, students have been inspired by people talking about engineering, surveying, infrastructure, panel beating, farming, vet nursing, hospitality and outdoor education. We are grateful to the speakers who give up their time so willing to inspire and inform our students.

Wish Programme (formerly Programme Incubator)
On the 3rd of August 12 Year 12 and 13 students participated in the Wish Programme at The Timaru Hospital. This programme, which was known as Programme Incubator, is intended to let students explore the many different careers available in the Health sector. The students attended presentations from a Speech Language Pathologist, Audiologist, Dietician and Physiotherapy student. We then went on a tour of the mental health ward, AT&R ward and finally ended our time at the hospital in the A&E department. Students got to ask the health professionals lots of questions about their jobs and to also try out some things first hand. We are grateful to the SCDHB for making this opportunity available to our students and also for arranging work shadowing for our Year 13 students interested in Nursing, Occupational Therapy and House Surgeon roles.

ARA Sector Days
Students in Years 11-13 have also had the opportunity to take part in the Sector Days run by ARA Polytechnic. Students have attended sector days in Trades, Health, Hospitality and Service Industries and Food Processing Industries. Students have been able to visit local businesses and see first hand what it would be like to work in one of these industries. They have also then discovered what courses they could study at ARA that might complement the industry they are interested in working in. The students have found these days really informative and lots of fun.

Local Employers Expo
On Monday the 27th of August our Year 11 students attended a local Employers Expo in Temuka. This Expo was like a "Speed Networking" event, where small groups of students were able to engage with a variety of employers for 10 minutes at a time. Eighteen employers participated in this event and there was a range of industries covered from earthmoving to law to agriculture. The aim of this event was to encourage students to start thinking about their future career pathways and to get them to consider careers they may previously not have thought about.
