Before I started Gateway this year I was looking forward to getting some experience in building and construction as building has been something I have always enjoyed. I was a little worried about the amount of school I would miss out on and how behind I might get in some classes but it hasn't been a problem. I have had prior experience in a workplace, so I wasn't too worried about that.

The careers that I researched were: building, joinery and draftsman.  I had taster days with Holman Holdings Building Ltd and Nolan Building before signing on for a Gateway placement with Holman Holdings.  I go to work experience every Wednesday and have gained experience in a wide range of tasks including internal linings, skirting boards, framing, window and door installation,  exterior cladding, fences,  joinery installation, bathrooms, structural beams and demolition work.

I am registered with the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) and have theory and practical work to do.  The Training Adviser from BCITO visits me at school and in the workplace to assesses my BCATS unit standards, I have also completed workplace preparation standards on First Aid, Workplace Safety and Personal Presentation.

When I leave school I would like to continue with a construction trade and intend to gain my builders certificate.
