“Religious faith and science give an appreciation of each other, and to be close to the universe is to be close to God. The Church loves Science!”

Last Tuesday afternoon, 30 April, nine students from Yr 9-13 and three staff members travelled up to Christchurch to spend some chill time at the Canterbury Museum and then attend the main event of listening to “The Pope’s Astronomer” and Director of the Vatican Observatory, Br Guy Consolmagno, who was touring NZ to share his research and thoughts.

He spoke about his own science investigations into the heat capacity of meteorites, results of which he hopes will help humanity to deflect a future asteroid that is on a collision course with Earth.

But Br Guy also wanted to focus his presentation on the beauty of the night sky, and how it provides a taste of God. He said, “Religious faith and science give an appreciation of each other, and to be close to the universe is to be close to God. The Church loves Science!”

He urged all the young people that filled the lecture theatre in The Piano: Centre for Music and the Arts to just, “Look up!”
