SUMMER NEWS FROM RONCALLI ROWING

Roncalli rowers took a short break over Christmas and reconvened on January 4th for an intensive five day training camp at Lake Opuha. All rowers rowed between 100 and 150km over this time and hands were worn and bloodied. The rowers continued their training after this with 4-5 days a week leaving Timaru at 4.45am for training at Lake Opuha. On other days, and sometime same day, they trained through ergs or running. Their coaches Brian Stevenson and Geoff McCrostie have put a commendable effort into the rowers as has their manager, Mike O’Brien – none of whom presently have youngsters rowing for Roncalli.

The rowers took part in two regattas over the Summer, the Canterbury and South Island Championships.

As well as intensive training and two very successful regattas the rowers and their support crew are a super efficient moving team – derigging and transporting boats around South Canterbury and the Mackenzie without a second’s thought, setting up marquees and generally managing themselves very efficiently as they spent 9 nights away from home in various living quarters, some quite basic, over the Summer.
