Tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa

Nga mihi mahana, nga mihi nui ki a koutou.

For those of you who don’t know me, I wish to introduce myself and my whakapapa is above.

I have worked in education for nearly 30 years now having taken over the running of Tarahaoa Te Kohanga Reo (language nest, total immersion preschool) as an 18 year old. The idea behind kohanga was that learning was for the whole whanau and it is where I developed the skills needed to work with people of all ages.

I spent 3 years employed by the Ministry of Education as a facilitator for 11 schools in the Aoraki region known as The Aoraki Cluster. In this role I worked in classes to provide a sound base knowledge of Te Reo and Tikanga Māori, with the teachers upskilling and growing their knowledge through learning alongside the tamariki. Learning was delivered using waiata, whakatauki, games and a lot of personal experience.

My current position is with the Kahui Ako. This means I work with and between the five schools, but each Monday I work at Roncalli. My role is varied and flexible. It includes teaching Te Reo to both Year 9 & 10 students and assisting with the development of the School Kapa Haka group. I also support staff as required concerning Te Ao Māori (Māori viewpoint) and assisting the school journey towards authentic Māori consultation.
