Junior Speech Cup 2021

Miss Roughan —

The Junior Speech Cup was held on the afternoon of Thursday 4 November.

Thursday, November 4 marked the annual Junior Speech Cup where five year nine competitors; Alexis Miller, Nick Monaco, Maevi Flemming, Matthew Armstrong and Tamzin Risman, and four year ten competitors; Max Hunt, Oliver Kirke, Ruby Grigsby and Madison Sugrue, flexed their oratory skills in the hopes of taking out the honours.

With topics ranging from climate change to the dawn raids, the contestants wowed the judges, Rose Struthers & Frankie Allan. The year ten runner up, Oliver Kirke, presented a powerful speech on the harm and inequity of prizegivings. The winner of the year ten competition, Madison Sugrue, gave a clever speech on the danger of misinformation where she drew the audience down the rabbit hole with her, only to break the spell at the end with amazing results.

The year nines also had a close race with three of the five competitors speaking on climate change. The runner up, Matthew Armstrong, took a unique approach using humor and movement to prove his point that climate change isn't a real issue today. In passionate opposition, the year 9 winner, Maevi Fleming, argued against Matthew's points in a compelling and stirring final speech. Well done to all who made the finals and were brave enough to stand and speak in front of their peers.
