Gateway Profile - Isla Young
My role is assisting nurses in a primary care setting which offers a wide variety of work that is very much hands on
Before starting Gateway I was interested in pursuing a career in the health sector. I researched potential careers and had two taster days where I was able to experience the careers hands-on. After trialing both registered nursing and health care assistant at two very different workplaces I decided to follow through with registered nursing.
Each Wednesday I spend the day at Pleasant Point Health Centre. Some of my tasks include taking and recording blood pressure, looking inside patients' ears and helping out with minor surgeries. I am assessed towards both NCEA level 2 and 3 unit standards through Careerforce.
A lot of my learning is practical meaning I take my assessments to work to get practical tasks ticked off. I work on my theory units during Gateway lessons throughout the rest of the week.
My focus for next year is completing NCEA Level 3 and obtaining UE. After that I would like to study a Bachelor of Nursing.
