Builder

The careers I researched and taster days trialed at the start of the year were building and crane operator. I selected building for my placement and have been going to Johnson Building for my Gateway work experience for one day every week since Term 1. I have been involved with all the basic things that go into renovating or building a new house eg putting in pink batts, framing and gibbing, I also sweep up when there's nothing to be done.

I am registered with BCITO. The unit standards I do at school are theory assessments, the assessor marks them at school but also likes to see what we're doing in our hard materials class and at my work placement. The units I am studying count towards an apprenticeship where I can apply my knowledge in the practical workplace. I would like to continue my training to become a qualified builder and plan to start an apprenticeship later this year. My advice for future Gateway students would be don’t rush into anything if you are uncertain or have goals you'd like to achieve.
