Junior Basketballers Grow in Confidence Showing Promise for the Future

Nigel Brown —

After aclimatising to the competition, the Roncalli Junior A Girls Basketball team finished just outside the semi finals in the Zone 4 Tournament in Timaru.

An amazing 4 days of basketball as the team, consisting of mostly Year 9 players, witnessed some incredible basketball.  20 school teams travelled from the top, bottom, left and right of the South Island to attend this tournament to take part in either the Premier Grade or A Grade. This tournament was a huge step up from the South Canterbury Secondary Schools competition as basketball played was on a completely different level.

Cobbling together a team especially for the tournament, the girls were led from the front by amazing performances from Briana Grace (71 Points) and Charlie Holden (51 Points). However, as always, it is the team around that creates these scoring opportunities: Aimee Hewitt, Amelia Rattray, Avana Richardt, Brya Donaldson, Jemma Kiernan, Lucy Betts, Hazel Henry, Isla Young, Grace Heke and Sherina Tuiaki. The girls were consistent in playing with Roncalli spirit, respecting the referees and our opposition. They were always gracious in defeat and humble in victory.

Overall results for Roncalli A (Playing in the A Grade)

  • Papanui High School 74 Roncalli A 24
  • Buller High School 45 Roncalli A 22
  • Roncalli A 63 Columba College 58
  • Roncalli A 66 Roncalli B 27
  • Ellesmere High School 65 Roncalli A 45
  • Roncalli A 54 Roncalli B 39 (5th / 6th Play off)

Final placing 5th, Roncalli A just missed out on the 3rd / 4th play off game by a points differential of 14 after Columba, Ellesmere and Roncalli A were all tied on the same competition points.

A huge thank you to Year 13 students Kyra Whyte and Brittney Young for their time and expertise that was invaluable and the team could not have functioned without you both.
